The team have also kept wicket-keepers Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Narayan Jagadeesan and Litton Das in their squad.
Iyer Has Excellent Leadership Skills
Aakash Chopra, the former cricketer turned commentator, has said that Shreyas Iyer could become the most expensive player at the IPL mega auction to be held in Bangalore on February 12 and 13. Iyer is one of the four Indian players in the marquee set for the auction. The other three are Ravichandran Ashwin, Pat Cummins and Kagiso Rabada.
Iyer has been a good captain for Delhi Capitals this season and is also a great batting option for them. He has a calm head and is able to make decisions even under pressure.
Iyer has a great chance of being picked by either KKR or RCB. He has the right qualities to be a great leader and is capable of taking the team to new heights. However, he has to improve his decision-making process in order to be one of the best captains in IPL history. His current form is also not good and he must work on his weaknesses.
He Has Great Tactical Knowledge
Iyer has a great tactical knowledge of the game and is always on the lookout for opportunities to score runs. He also knows when to play defensively and has a good understanding of his team’s strengths and weaknesses.
Iyer was instrumental in KKR’s strong start to the season, but they suffered a major blow when he got injured. He is set to miss the first half of the season, leaving Nitish Rana as the stand-in captain for now.
Despite Iyer’s absence, Chopra believes that the team will still be competitive. He points out that KKR has a solid Indian batting lineup with Iyer, Nitish Rana, and Rinku Singh as pure batter options. Moreover, the team has two quality spinners in Varun Chahar and Harshit Vaidya.
He Has Great Batting Skills
The former India batsman believes that Iyer is a great batting player and his absence will hurt the Kolkata Knight Riders. He adds that Iyer is the backbone of the team’s batting line-up and they will miss him badly. He explains that KKR have few Indian batters in their squad and it will be difficult for them to make the playoffs without Iyer’s presence.
Chopra also feels that Iyer is a better batsman than Ishan Kishan. He points out that Iyer’s strike rate against spin is much higher and he can hit the ball for big runs off small deliveries. He also explains that Iyer is good against fast bowling as well and can score quick runs off those overs. However, he says that Iyer should bat at whatever position is given to him. In T20 cricket, early wickets don’t fall quickly and it is important that a batsman has the right mindset. This is where Iyer excels and he should be promoted up the order.
He Has Great Fitness
Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra is concerned about the recurring back injury of Shreyas Iyer. Iyer missed the entire ODI series against New Zealand and the first Test against Australia due to back spasms.
The KKR skipper is also facing fitness concerns ahead of the start of the IPL 2022 season, with Nitish Rana taking over the reins in his absence. Iyer’s batting form has been inconsistent and he could struggle to put runs on the board against Punjab Kings.
The KKR squad is full of Indian players with Ravichandran Ashwin, Pat Cummins, Quinton de Kock, Mohammed Shami, Shikhar Dhawan and Iyer all enlisted in the marquee list. Despite the setback of Iyer, Chopra believes that KKR will do well in this edition. The two-time champions will have to make a few changes though, including the departure of Shubman Gill. They are currently chasing a place in the playoffs. They have a 50 per cent chance of making it to the top four.
